Their tenth full-length,\u00a0\u2018Kissing Luck Goodbye,\u2019 is a scorched-earth statement: uncompromising, volatile, and absolutely uninterested in nostalgia or comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a victory lap. The album took shape amid chronic vertigo, the devastating loss of close friend and collaborator\u00a0<strong>Douglas McCarthy<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<strong>Nitzer Ebb<\/strong>\u00a0(to whom the record is dedicated), and the suffocating weight of the current political climate. Studio breakdowns, dead car batteries, busted air conditioners\u2014it felt cursed. \u201c<em>Everything\u2019s breaking. We\u2019re breaking. We\u2019re broken,\u201d <\/em>Kuperus admits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, fury won.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than retreat, ADULT. went deeper\u2014new microphones for the first time in 20 years, obsessive sound design, massive sample libraries built from thrift-store records, field recordings, and bizarre textures (including shop-vacs run through pedals). At any moment, a dozen elements collide in dizzying, dissonant harmony. Producer <strong>Nolan Gray<\/strong>\u2014a chance collaborator they met while staying at his rental\u2014helped them push the process further than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Songs emerged from strange places. <em>No One Is Coming<\/em> takes its tempo from a skipping record captured on a phone during Kuperus\u2019 50th birthday trip.\u00a0<em>None of It\u2019s Fun<\/em>\u00a0detonates with breathless speed and gut-ripping lines that feel like they\u2019re being screamed directly at the listener.
