Five years on, that spark has grown into a fully realised debut that feels lived-in, road-tested, and lovingly overcooked in the best possible way.\u00a0\u2018cash rich\u2019\u00a0isn\u2019t rushed. It\u2019s the sound of a band taking their time, trusting their instincts, and waiting until the moment felt right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Packed with lo-fi, fuzz-drenched gems that race, stomp, and soar, the album distills years of practice room sweat and relentless touring into a tight, punchy statement. Songs were written, dropped, reworked, and revived across half a decade \u2014 a slow-burn process drummer&nbsp;<strong>Thomas Lisle Coe-Brooker<\/strong>&nbsp;describes as deliberate and necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>We\u2019ve been slowly curating the album since releasing the\u00a0Skeletons\u00a0EP in lockdown,\u201d<\/em> he explains. \u201c<em>Tracks were dropped and added over the years until it felt good. It really represents the first five years of our band. I wanted us to tour loads and feel like there was an audience who actually wanted an album \u2014 not just release something that falls on deaf ears.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That honesty runs deep through snake eyes\u2019 DNA. At their core, they\u2019re a blueprint for modern UK underground survival: two friends, doing everything themselves, staying (mostly) positive, and pushing forward on a shoestring budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>We don\u2019t always stay posi, to tell the truth,<\/em>\u201d admits guitarist and vocalist\u00a0<strong>Jim Heffy<\/strong>. \u201c<em>That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to spread positivity through the music and the live shows. We want to bring joy into people\u2019s day \u2014 a big old hug for your eyes and ears.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike plenty of bands who smooth over the struggle to present a polished version of success, snake eyes have always been upfront about the financial and emotional realities of being independent artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>You have to put everything into it, including your own money,<\/em>\u201d says Heffy. \u201c<em>You\u2019ve got to do it for the love of the game \u2014 and that\u2019s what we do it for.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brooker agrees, adding, \u201c<em>Anyone can do it if they\u2019re willing to put the work in, but it\u2019s also important to be honest about what you\u2019re getting into. It\u2019s not for the faint of heart.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That DIY ethos extends straight into the studio. The band chose to self-produce \u2018cash rich\u2019\u00a0to maintain full creative control. Drums, bass, and guitar were tracked live at\u00a0<strong>Brighton Electric Studio 1<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0<strong>Josh Harrison<\/strong>\u00a0(Snayx, Royal Blood), before overdubs and vocals were captured at\u00a0<strong>The Bookhouse<\/strong>\u00a0in London with\u00a0<strong>Tom Hill<\/strong>\u00a0(John, Gender Roles, The None).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>We got real nerdy with it,<\/em>\u201d laughs Heffy. \u201c<em>Different amps, pedals, snares for different songs \u2014 we took the time to get everything sounding exactly right.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Extra layers \u2014 backing vocals, percussion, vinyl scratching, even pump organ \u2014 were recorded wherever and whenever possible: at home, in hotel rooms while Brooker toured the US as a videographer, or in his own office-studio where the band also shoot most of their videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>We didn\u2019t want to just pad things out with virtual instruments,\u201d<\/em> Brooker explains. \u201c<em>If we used them, they were layered with live parts. Sometimes we didn\u2019t know who to ask to do something\u2026 so we just learned how to do it ourselves.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That meant learning to scratch vinyl DJ-style, bowing acoustic guitars to mimic string sections, and even tag-teaming a pump organ \u2014 Jim on keys, Brooker on the foot pedal. \u201c<em>Where there\u2019s a will, there\u2019s a way,\u201d<\/em> he laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mixing duties were shared too: Tom Hill mixed standout track\u00a0<strong><em>Hug Me<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(then all the full-band songs), while Brooker handled\u00a0<strong><em>Cash Rich<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><em>Robot Boy<\/em>.<\/strong> The album was mastered by\u00a0<strong>Dan Coutant<\/strong>\u00a0(Drug Church, Lemuria, Gnarwolves), a longtime collaborator who, according to the band, \u201c<em>always does a beautiful job<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Juggling all of that comes at a cost. \u201c<em>Sometimes I forget I\u2019m also the drummer,\u201d <\/em>Brooker admits. \u201c<em>It\u2019s creatively fulfilling, but totally all-consuming. Lots of all-nighters. I\u2019m trying to get better at knowing when to stop \u2014 and when to ask for help.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lyrically,\u00a0\u2018cash rich\u2019\u00a0is what the band call \u201c<em>a collection of doomsday foot-tappers for our fellow hippies.\u201d<\/em> It tackles environmental collapse, self-belief, anxiety, heartbreak \u2014 heavy themes wrapped in songs that still make you want to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>There\u2019s a tune about headaches. A tune about confidence. A tune about having your wee heart broken,<\/em>\u201d says Heffy. \u201c<em>Older tracks like \u2018Jar Full of Wasps\u2019 and \u2018Slugs\u2019 are pretty introspective. As the world opened back up and we started touring, the writing zoomed out to the bigger picture.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That bigger picture includes activism. snake eyes are vocal supporters of&nbsp;<strong>Music Declares Emergency<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Music Venue Trust<\/strong>, and other grassroots campaigns fighting to protect the future of live music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>Music\u2019s been my life since I learned \u2018Nothing Else Matters\u2019 at 14,\u201d <\/em>says Brooker. \u201c<em>The idea of young people not having local venues is bleak. That, alongside my passion for veganism and the environment, makes these causes really personal.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>We\u2019re a pair of tree-hugging softies,\u201d<\/em> adds Heffy. \u201c<em>Environmentalism and equality matter to us. We try to tour sustainably and use our platform for positive change. We mean what we say.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the seriousness behind much of the record,\u00a0\u2018cash rich\u2019\u00a0is bursting with humour, warmth, and colour \u2014 a balance that makes snake eyes so easy to fall for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>Life\u2019s serious enough<\/em>,\u201d says Heffy. \u201c<em>We take the band seriously, but it\u2019s got to be tongue-in-cheek too. We want to be a ray of sunshine. A burst of colour. People should leave our shows smiling.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past year, the band\u2019s shift to a lean two-piece live setup has only sharpened that vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI now have two million pedals and play bass too,\u201d<\/em> Heffy laughs. \u201c<em>But press shots are easier, hotels are cheaper, and it\u2019s pushed us creatively. We\u2019re at the top of our game live right now.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That confidence has been earned the hard way, touring relentlessly across the UK and Europe alongside&nbsp;<strong>The Meffs, Dune Rats, You Me At Six, Kid Kapichi, Dinosaur Pile-Up, Bad Nerves, Wine Lips<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>The Xcerts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>As soon as lockdown lifted, we came out swinging,\u201d<\/em> says Heffy. \u201c<em>We\u2019ve made lifelong friends. Everyone\u2019s out there doing the same thing, and it feels like a growing community.
