But if any band has earned the right to take their time, it\u2019s Iceage. The Danish five-piece \u2014 vocalist Elias R\u00f8nnenfelt, guitarists Johan Suurballe Wieth and Casper Morilla Fernandez, drummer Dan Kj\u00e6r Nielsen, and bassist Jakob Tvilling Pless \u2014 have just resurfaced with <em>Star<\/em>, their first new music since the 2021 fan and critical favourite \u2018Seek Shelter\u2019. And yeah, it was worth the wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Out now via Mexican Summer, <em>Star<\/em> arrives with a video directed by Thinh T. Petrus Nguyen, and the whole thing feels like a band rediscovering what makes them tick \u2014 only louder, warmer, and more alive than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1rvqA8rMTu8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Love Song from the Edge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing about Iceage: over 18 years and five studio albums, they\u2019ve built their entire identity around the idea of collapse. Not despair, exactly \u2014 more like that dizzying feeling of nearly falling apart and pulling yourself together at the exact same moment. It\u2019s a tightrope walk through the chaos of being human, and nobody does it quite like them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Star<\/em> leans hard into that tension, but this time the fuel is pure love. We\u2019re not talking soft-focus romance though. This is love as a natural disaster \u2014 the kind that wakes you up, rearranges the furniture of your whole world, and leaves you feeling like you\u2019re burning out in the best possible way. R\u00f8nnenfelt still writes from the grit up, but on <em>Star<\/em> there\u2019s an electricity to it, an animation. Something has been switched on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musically, the track is a rush: a restless sixteenth-note jangle pulse, twinkling guitar weaving against slashier, more aggressive tones, and a sense of everything building toward something enormous. Then \u2014 out of nowhere \u2014 handclaps. Enthusiastic, almost delirious handclaps. It\u2019s the kind of detail that makes you grin without knowing why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dying Stars and the Biggest High<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The central metaphor here is genuinely beautiful. What does love make you feel like? According to Iceage: a dying star. And not in a sad way. A star\u2019s death is the biggest event in the universe \u2014 catastrophic, incandescent, total. To feel that level of collapse while being completely present, completely alive in it? That\u2019s the whole tape. That\u2019s the song.<br>It\u2019s Iceage doing what only Iceage can: turning the apocalyptic into the euphoric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Praise Keeps Coming<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The band\u2019s been racking up serious critical credibility for years now. Stereogum called their evolution \u201c<em>the most ambitious and accessible<\/em>\u201d with each release. Pitchfork described their progression as rebuilding raw foundations into \u201c<em>a loftier, more refined temple.<\/em>\u201d And Dork simply crowned them \u201c<em>one of the most boundary-pushing bands in punk.<\/em>\u201d High bars, all cleared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Catch Them Live<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re in Copenhagen, Iceage have a date at Syd For Solen on August 14th.
