It&#8217;s a bit of a scoundrel. In the best possible way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1858458397\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a href=\"https:\/\/breakfold.bandcamp.com\/album\/tracker-ep\">Tracker EP by break_fold<\/a><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are we working with?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Pushing into the more experimental edges of his sound, <em>Workie Ticket<\/em> is break_fold at his most rhythmically playful and sonically restless. We&#8217;re talking syncopated patterns, off-kilter percussion, and subtly dissonant modulating synth lines that refuse to sit still. The track resists easy structure \u2014 it just keeps twisting, unfolding in these restless little movements that suit its title perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The phrase itself is pure North Eastern gold. Producer <strong>Tim Hann<\/strong> breaks it down:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Workie Ticket is a North Eastern phrase used to describe someone who is a bit of a wind-up merchant, a bit cheeky. The title of the song came quite early on in the production, and the track feels almost like a bit of a scoundrel. Me and my Dad tend to use the phrase when talking about footballers who are clearly shithouses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically rooted in British military slang \u2014 originally used to describe someone deliberately difficult or rebellious \u2014 the phrase has long since evolved into an affectionate staple of North Eastern vernacular. Tim has a knack for pulling these regional expressions into his music, using them as both titles and conceptual anchors, weaving personal and cultural memory right into the DNA of the compositions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The bigger picture: &#8216;Tracker&#8217; EP<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Workie Ticket<\/em> slots neatly into the thematic world of <strong>&#8216;Tracker&#8217;<\/strong>, the forthcoming companion piece to break_fold&#8217;s 2025 EP <strong>&#8216;Planner&#8217;<\/strong>. Where &#8216;Planner&#8217; reflected Tim&#8217;s father&#8217;s work-focused alter-ego, &#8216;Tracker&#8217; flips to a different mode entirely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;The Tracker EP is a reference to my Dad, who gave himself nicknames that others in the family then started using. &#8216;Tracker&#8217; is a reference to his persona when on holiday or away from work. If we were on holiday and were trying to find a place of interest, he&#8217;d be in Tracker mode. Planner is when my Dad was at work.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the EP, break_fold stitches together family sayings, misheard phrases and the small but defining details of growing up in the North East of England in the 1990s. Three albums and several EPs deep, his work sits somewhere in the space between &#8220;pessimism and optimism in equal measure&#8221; \u2014 his words, and we&#8217;d say that tracks.
