{"id":45080,"date":"2026-05-03T12:15:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-03T16:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=45080"},"modified":"2026-03-29T21:13:33","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T01:13:33","slug":"flesh-planet-tackle-neurodivergent-depression-head-on-with-debut-ep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=45080","title":{"rendered":"FLESH PLANET tackle neurodivergent depression head-on with debut EP"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Yorkshire alternative\/electronic quartet <strong>FLESH PLANET<\/strong> are making serious noise with the release of their debut EP <strong>&#8216;\/\/ first flesh&#8217;<\/strong> \u2014 out now \u2014 and its latest single, <em>Computer Games &amp; Rude Things<\/em>, a glitchy, dystopian banger that hits harder than it probably should for something named after an arcade habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blending grunge, shoegaze, industrial, and electronics into something that feels genuinely fresh, <strong>&#8216;\/\/ first flesh&#8217;<\/strong> was recorded at Chairworks, the band&#8217;s residential studio in Castleford \u2014 the same room that&#8217;s hosted the likes of <strong>The Reytons, Kaiser Chiefs, Paul Heaton, and Richard Hawley<\/strong>. Not bad company to keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UpIACadxwtU?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Commodore Amiga Vibes Meet Existential Dread<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by the weird, wonky sci-fi soundscapes of early 90s Commodore Amiga game music, <em>Computer Games &amp; Rude Things<\/em> was built around an idea to create something mechanical but with a dusky, dystopian undercurrent. It works \u2014 and then some.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lyrics dig into something a lot of people will recognise but rarely hear articulated this clearly. Vocalist <strong>Damo Hughes<\/strong> explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;<em>This song is talking about one of the dimensions of my own neurodivergent kind of depression that I know lots of other people experience. It&#8217;s this battle between these two contradicting fears. On one hand there&#8217;s the fear of the outside world that feels like it&#8217;s just full of doom and like it&#8217;s gonna chew you up and force you into this meaningless existence if you participate. And on the other hand, you&#8217;re scared that you&#8217;re not gonna realise your potential if you don&#8217;t do something. It&#8217;s basically a reality check to stop romanticising your own suffering and do something positive.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Williams Amusements: The Accidental Video Location<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The video for <em>Computer Games &amp; Rude Things<\/em> was filmed at <strong>Williams Amusements<\/strong> in Castleford \u2014 a massive retro arcade warehouse that just so happens to be two minutes around the corner from the band&#8217;s studio. Guitarist <strong>Drey Pavlovic<\/strong> tells the story:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;We originally went out looking to buy a flightcase from an electrical warehouse that was in the same industrial area. Turns out the flightcase was really shit and not what we were after at all, but this huge arcade warehouse was just sitting looking at us from next door.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>One tour of the premises and a fair bit of pestering later, they had their location. Filmmaker <strong>Josh from Okkida Media<\/strong> pulled together the crew, and the result is a video that fits the track&#8217;s retro-futurist energy like a cartridge in a slot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;<em>It&#8217;s full of cool retro arcade games from our youth and it fits the song vibe perfectly&#8230; He got an awesome crew together and we had a blast making the video.<\/em>&#8221; \u2014 Drey Pavlovic<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Allusondrugs to FLESH PLANET<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The band is comprised of former <strong>Allusinlove\/Allusondrugs<\/strong> members \u2014 <strong>Damian Hughes<\/strong> (vocals, guitar, keys), <strong>Drey Pavlovic<\/strong> (guitar), <strong>Jemal Beau Malki<\/strong> (bass), and <strong>Connor Fisher-Atack<\/strong> (drums) \u2014 who, after their previous project dissolved in 2019, spent years pursuing solo paths before the pull of a jam session brought them back together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Damo launched <strong>Ackworth Guitar Setups<\/strong> and explored electronic music; Drey moved into production and toured as sound engineer for <strong>Arthur Brown<\/strong>; Jemal built a successful <strong>Twitch<\/strong> stream; Connor played sessions across various projects. When they eventually reconvened for a throwback Allusondrugs jam session \u2014 which sold out on limited CD via Bandcamp \u2014 the spark for FLESH PLANET was lit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This time around, the creative compromises are gone.
