Manchester electronic trio <strong>The Cutter<\/strong> have stripped out that driving guitar riff and rebuilt the whole thing from scratch \u2014 pulsing 808s, industrial textures, shimmering synths \u2014 turning a guitar-led state-of-the-nation piece into something darker, moodier, and deeply immersive. Dagger&#8217;s spoken-word vocal rides cleanly over the top, doing exactly what it&#8217;s always done: cutting through the noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wLFOL35KLaQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A New Phase for the Project<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">poor effort kicked off in 2024 with the self-released anti-anthem <em>You&#8217;re Wrong, I&#8217;m Right (Symphony)<\/em>, quickly earning airplay before <em>HMRC<\/em> \u2014 a very relatable lament on low pay and working-life limbo \u2014 became a live crowd favourite. <em>city of hope<\/em> followed in 2025, a guitar-driven commentary on modern city life that balanced opportunity against inequality and completed the debut EP, released via <strong>Home Taping<\/strong> in partnership with <strong>EMI North<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that EP&#8217;s most defining moment gets a whole new life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;The remix was pieced together with file exchanges in between tours and then finalised over a couple of sessions at my studio. It was really interesting to see Charlie&#8217;s approach and how he would typically make a song for The Cutter using the foundations of &#8216;city of hope&#8217;, then Lucy did a great job on the mastering too. It placed the track in a totally different light.&#8221;<\/em> \u2014 Matty Dagger<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Are The Cutter?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Cutter<\/strong> \u2014 Ewan Kinrade (vocals), Charlie Marriott (guitar), and Lucy Green (synths) \u2014 are a Manchester trio drawing comparisons to New Order and Cocteau Twins, blending goth, electronica, and shoegaze into something atmospheric and very much their own. Their version of <em>city of hope<\/em> layers samples and shimmering atmospherics beneath Dagger&#8217;s vocal, pulling new dimensions out of familiar material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8216;poor effort remix EP: vol 1&#8217; won&#8217;t stop at The Cutter either \u2014 contributions from <strong>Nightjar<\/strong>, <strong>The Karate Suit<\/strong>, and poor effort&#8217;s own reworkings are all part of the broader series. Each one aims to refract the project&#8217;s world through a different creative lens.
