Long Winter announces 10th anniversary ‘Together Apart’ DIY festival

Long Winter Together Apart

This fall, Long Winter has announced a special 10th anniversary extension to its winter series. Together Apart activities run September – November 2021, with the aim of connecting DIY music and arts communities across Ontario, Europe, and beyond.

Festivities will include an outdoor rooftop concert series at the Garrison featuring FIVER, monthly editions of a cross-city zine,  installations by partner curators Bunker 2 and Younger than Beyoncé,  features by Unit 2,  Sou Sou, Strangewaves and more, IRL / cross-stream live performances from Toronto (St. Anne’s) and La Station in Paris, France, with a multi-channel video program co-produced with Collectif Ascidiacea and Club Quarantine, articles and playlists on Long Winter’s blog, through StationStation radio, and more.

Long Winter’s Together Apart showcases local underground and DIY music scenes in Ontario and France. The Toronto-Paris partnership includes a conference and workshop stream with  resources and information-sharing between local collectives. Focused on issues of space access, it bridges needs and interests of DIY and underground communities internationally, providing exchange between scenes, and cross-sector dialogue between local arts communities and researchers, urban planners and policy makers.

More about Long Winter

Long Winter is Toronto’s essential all-ages, pay-what-you-can inter-arts series that takes place throughout our coldest season. Featuring over 200 local artists/collectives and welcoming nearly 5,000 participants from November-March, Long Winter animates multiple rooms on multiple floors, transforming spaces into immersive, collaborative environments. Events are dense and eclectic, showcasing a broad cross-section of the best in Toronto-area DIY and underground scenes. Featured work includes performance art, theatre and dance, large-scale sculptural installations, projections (single and dual screen videos, still images), visual installations (print, painting, photography collage) and interactive presentations including original video games by local programmers. Initially housed at the Great Hall on Queen Street West, Long Winter has programmed teeming shows at venues ranging from the Gladstone Hotel, to the Hearn Generating Station (Luminato), to the Galleria Mall. We are passionate about integrating diverse artistic communities and culture; gathering some of the most exciting, cutting-edge local talent under one roof.

More about La Station – Gare des Mines

Created in 2002, the Collectif MU is an artistic production office specializing in the fields of music, sound art, and new media. The MU Collective designs and produces artistic interventions defined by their relationship to the territory and the context in which they emerge, and conducts research at the frontiers of art, technology and science. Every year, MU welcomes artists in residence at La Goutte d’Or (at the Garage MU – which became the Fabrique de Culture de la Région Île-de-France in 2012 as part of a three-year agreement renewed in 2016) and at Porte d’Aubervilliers, and develops collective projects that promote the sharing of knowledge and tools.
In spring 2016, MU opened the doors of La Station – Gare des Mines, as part of the temporary artistic sites, a transitional urban planning initiative initiated by SNCF Immobilier. At the crossroads of Paris, Saint-Denis and Aubervilliers, La Station – Gare des Mines is both a festive and convivial place and a laboratory dedicated to emerging artistic scenes.
