If you like your debut singles chaotic, cathartic, and a little bit unhinged, buckle up—South Wales’ latest export MORN has officially arrived. Their first track, Modern Man, just dropped via the tastemaking legends at Speedy Wunderground, and it’s a full-tilt sprint into noise-drenched bliss.
Straight outta the farmlands of Monmouth, MORN is made up of two sets of siblings (yes, really), who describe their sound as “doom over beautiful chords.” That might sound poetic, but what you get with Modern Man is a jagged, fuzz-soaked ride with enough raw energy to rattle your fillings. Picture gang vocals yelling Life is shit when you’re all alone, but it’s fine*, guitars spiraling out into noisy oblivion, and a closing chorus that descends into wild la la las. It’s like punk, post-rock, and existential dread had a noisy little baby.
Speaking on the track, vocalist/guitarist Oliver Riba says: “Modern Man came from the wild urgency of our lives. Born from teenage riffs, shaped by laughter, anger, and fear. It’s a desperate sprint through the loneliness and madness of routine, a strange reflection on the dream of escape.”
The whole thing was tracked live with Speedy’s sonic wizard Dan Carey behind the desk—because of course it was.
MORN only touched down in London in 2024, but they’ve already carved out a spot in the city’s thriving DIY underbelly. Headline gigs have sold out, including a raucous blow-the-doors-off set at The Windmill Brixton to close out Independent Venue Week. Glastonbury even took note, giving them a nod in their Emerging Talent longlist. Not bad for a band just getting going.
So who are MORN exactly?
- Oliver Riba – vocals, guitar
- Robert Riba – vocals, guitar
- Mae Ryder – vocals, bass
- Noah Ryder – drums
Get into the noisy beauty of Modern Man now—it’s the kind of debut that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t ask politely.
