Portishead are releasing their track Chase The Tear on 14th November on vinyl (with digital download code). All proceeds from the sale of the single will go to Amnesty International. Want to pick it up early? – 200 signed, advance copies of the 12” will be available from the XL Recordings stall at New York’s Independent Label Market on 8th October. You can also pre-order from Rough Trade Shops.
I really was blown away by Portishead’s ‘Dummy’ album since it was so groundbreaking and Geoff Burrows used such an innovative turntable technique and use of samples. Unfortunately, they seem to not have progressed at all in my opinion since those original recordings. I do appreciate them for what they are, but not inspired in the least by them in many years. I want them to try something new and push the musical envelope as they did in the early 90’s.
So, having provided my opinion on the state of Portishead (sorry all the Portishead fans out there), let’s go back to the discussion of 12″ release. The most interesting things about this special 12″ are that it is for charity and the b-side remix by the brilliant Doldrums hailing from Toronto. I am really excited to hear their reworking of the original Portishead track. This may be a remix only purchase. Doldrums also recorded an amazing cover version of Chase The Tear – watch the video below.
