The New York Dolls’ wild debut gets a high-fidelity glow-up thanks to MoFi

Heads up, vinyl lovers and punk-glam diehards — the New York Dolls’ iconic, snarling debut album just got the royal audiophile treatment. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (aka MoFi, the reissue legends) have dropped the first-ever super high-fidelity version of this raucous classic, and yeah, it’s a big deal.

This new release is a numbered 180g 45RPM 2LP set (a mouthful, but trust us, your ears will thank you), lovingly pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing and wrapped in a slick Stoughton gatefold jacket. It’s available now over at mofi.com, just waiting to shake up your turntable.

Now, let’s talk why this album matters. Originally released in 1973, New York Dolls basically kicked off the whole punk-meets-glam thing before either genre had fully found its name. Think: trashy guitars, attitude for days, lipstick, leather, and lyrics that sneer. Rolling Stone called it the 301st Greatest Album of All Time, Mojo ranked it 49th, and the track Personality Crisis earned a spot among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs Ever. Not too shabby for a band that sounded like they might collapse mid-song (in the best way).

Produced by none other than Todd Rundgren (yes, that Todd Rundgren), the original album struck this beautiful balance between reckless abandon and real studio chops. Rundgren got it. He understood that the Dolls’ sloppy swagger wasn’t a mess — it was magic. From barroom pianos to honking sax and a touch of Moog synth, the details were there. And now, with MoFi’s ultra-clean reissue, those details punch through like never before.

You’ll hear David Johansen’s vocals in all their raspy glory, and guitar slingers Johnny Thunders and Sylvain Sylvain practically leap from the speakers. With the extra groove space of the 45RPM format, this reissue cranks up the clarity without losing the grit. It’s all still gloriously messy, but now you can really feel every scrape, snarl, and strut.

The Dolls were never about perfection — they were about chaos, charm, and flipping the bird to whatever was expected. And this reissue? It captures that raw, rebellious energy with precision. It’s a fistfight of an album, wrapped in eyeliner and attitude, and now it sounds better than ever.
