This latest single, like much of the band’s work, is rooted in personal experience. Frontman Rob Taxpayer shares the heartbreaking true story behind the song:
When a close friend of mine passed away, his dog was taken to animal control and locked up with a muzzle on. She was terrified, barking and growling in confusion. Because of that, they decided she was ‘dangerous’ and scheduled her to be put down within 24 hours—unless someone stepped in to save her. A family friend managed to rescue her just in time, and after some bouncing around, she found a loving home. And that’s how we ended up with a dog.
This song is about that—about loving the broken things in spite of the so-called dogcatchers of the world, and finding meaning in those moments of loss and survival.
At War With The Dogcatchers follows the band’s previously released singles, Circle Protector and Evil Everywhere, setting the stage for ‘Circle Breaker,’ a record that promises to be their most ambitious yet.
CIRCLE BREAKER: A NEW CHAPTER IN THE TAXPAYERS’ EVOLUTION
Since forming in 2007, The Taxpayers have built a reputation for their DIY spirit and genre-bending sound, seamlessly fusing elements of punk, folk, jazz, and more. Their discography includes the beloved 2012 concept album ‘God, Forgive These Bastards’and their last full-length release, ‘Big Delusion Factory’ (2016). Now, after selling out shows across the U.S. and headlining festivals in Australia, the band is ready to unleash their latest sonic experiment.
Spanning a wide range of styles and emotions, ‘Circle Breaker’ is both furious and heartfelt, blending chaotic punk anthems (I Am One Thousand, Nightmarish Population) with stripped-down ballads (Nobody is a Lost Cause, Empty Shed) and even moments of unexpected hope (Naked Trees, Future Island, Outline of Your Blood).
“These are the most personal songs we’ve ever written,” says Rob. “In the years leading up to this album, we experienced immense loss—friends and family members dying violently, alongside the births of our children. It was a strange and painful journey, but it’s all in these songs.”
That cycle of death and renewal is perfectly captured in the album art: a tree stump with fresh growth, created by band members Nasrene Taxpayer and Rob Taxpayer in collaboration with artist Shauna Corinne Murray.
“Just as we started working on this record, our guitarist Andrew lost a family member to a senseless act of violence. The very next day, the city cut down the cherry tree in front of his house. A week later, he sent me a picture: the stump had sprouted new growth. That’s what this album is about. Death, taxes… and life.”
