Philly’s Flatwaves are stirring up a storm again—and we’re here for it. Their new video for Paloma, fresh from their upcoming LP ‘Tell Me Secrets,’ is a fuzz-drenched dream ride that sways between shoegaze nostalgia and raw, psychedelic garage rock grit. Basically, it sounds like what might happen if your favourite ’90s alt bands got lost in a fever dream directed by David Lynch.
Shot with an otherworldly touch (props to Bob Sweeney behind the camera), Paloma feels like a memory you’re not sure really happened. It’s soaked in gauzy textures, layered noise, and that delicious tension between beautiful and brutal.
According to vocalist/guitarist Allie Lannutti, the song is a reflection on those quiet, compromising moments from youth—when we swallowed our voices to keep the peace. “We’re taught to be polite, to keep things comfortable for everyone else, even when it costs us our own peace,” she shares. “‘Paloma’ is reminiscing with your younger self about all the things you let slide… where do you draw the line? Tell them to fuck off? Forget being polite?”
‘Tell Me Secrets’ lands this summer on Abandon Everything Records (pre-order it here if you’re wise). It follows 2022’s debut LP ‘Numbra,’ which earned them a rep for crafting “psychedelic wastelands”—equal parts dreamy and disorienting.
Watch the video for Paloma below—and maybe scream into the void afterward. We won’t judge.
Wanna see Flatwaves live and loud? They’ll be supporting DAIISTAR and L.A. Witch on May 10 at Johnny Brenda’s in Philly, and heading west for Dum Dum Fest III at The Echo in LA on June 28. Don’t sleep.
