Into the noise vault: A Place To Bury Strangers unleash ‘Rare And Deadly’

New York noise-rock lifers A Place To Bury Strangers are cracking open the vault. The band announced ‘Rare And Deadly,’ a sprawling rarities collection landing April 3rd via Dedstrange, alongside the release of its first single, Everyone’s The Same. And if you’ve ever wondered what happens before a song becomes “finished,” this one’s for you.

Following 2024’s ‘Synthesizer,’ ‘Rare And Deadly’ digs deep into a decade of demos, B-sides, abandoned experiments, and beautiful dead ends, spanning recordings from 2015–2025. Pulled straight from Oliver Ackermann’s personal archive of late-night sessions, blown-out tapes, and half-remembered ideas, the album captures APTBS at their most raw and unfiltered. The noise is closer, the electricity more volatile, and the edges are left jagged on purpose.

What really sets ‘Rare And Deadly’ apart is its wildly unconventional release approach. Every format—CD, cassette, vinyl, and digital—features a different tracklist. No version tells the full story on its own. Instead, each format becomes its own portal into the archive, revealing alternate timelines, missing links, and parallel versions of the band’s inner world. It’s unstable by design, constantly shifting depending on how (and where) you listen.

Across these recordings, you can hear Ackermann’s restless creative mind at work. Some tracks feel like early blueprints for future chaos; others are paths the band never followed—too strange, too fragile, or too volatile to survive a proper studio album. Riffs buckle under malfunctioning pedals, melodies drown in feedback, and songs hover in that uncanny space between beauty and collapse. That tension is front and centre on Everyone’s The Same, where delicate moments are swallowed by walls of distortion until only their ghosts remain.

Ackermann describes the track as coming from a dream:

“I had a dream where a man led me to a brook, peaceful and calm. When he turned his head slightly, I saw the most evil smile imaginable… Beauty and horror coexisting in the same space. It felt like hell leaking into something serene.”

That push and pull—serenity versus dread, control versus chaos—has always been the band’s sweet spot.

More than a compilation, ‘Rare And Deadly’ feels like a documentary. You hear the room, the accidents, the experimentation, and the urgency of ideas captured before they disappear. It’s a reminder that A Place To Bury Strangers have always thrived in the in-between: where melody and noise collide, and nothing feels entirely safe.
