Tricky announces 15th studio album ‘Different When It’s Silent’ — hear new single Out Of Place

Six years is a long time. But when Tricky shows back up under his own name, you pay attention. The legendary Bristol producer and artist has just announced his 15th studio album, ‘Different When It’s Silent’, dropping July 17th via False Idols — and if the first single is any indication, this one’s going to hit hard.

The album’s lead track, Out Of Place, premiered on BBC Radio 6 Music courtesy of Lauren Laverne and it’s a proper closer-as-opener energy — tense, stripped, and alive with contrast. Longtime collaborator Marta brings a restrained vocal that plays beautifully against Tricky’s urgent, almost punk-like delivery. Funny enough, the track was originally written for Marta’s own album before Tricky pulled it back for this record. Good call.

Recorded between his home in France and sessions in Bristol, ‘Different When It’s Silent’ leans hard into the city that made him. Bristol singer Mitch Sanders anchors much of the record with his soulful falsetto — a voice that clearly vibes with Tricky on a deep, instinctive level. The sound? Skeletal blues, brooding electronics, distorted guitars, stark hip-hop rhythms. Fourteen tracks of the restless, genre-bending experimentation that’s been Tricky’s whole thing since ‘Maxinquaye’ in 1995.

The album follows a genuinely prolific stretch — Tricky’s been releasing music under various guises since 2020’s ‘Fall to Pieces’, including the collaborative Lonely Guest project, Theis Thaws with producer Mike Theis, and last year’s joint record ‘Out The Way’ with Marta. But it was his manager Alan McGee who heard these new sessions and said, essentially — this is a Tricky record. And it is.

“I just love making music. I’m grateful I’ve had the chance to live this life and keep creating.” — Tricky
