Haunt-pop band Younger Hunger will release their debut EP (pre-order) on December 7th. To mark the EP announcement, the band have shared the latest single Dead Inside from the forthcoming release. Take a listen to the track via Soundcloud below.
The EP was produced by Adam Castilla (The Colourist) and mastered by Joe LaPorta (David Bowie, The Weeknd, Beach House). The group takes inspiration from artists such as The Teenagers, The Smiths, and MGMT.
The trio — Tony Davia, Lou Connor, and Lauren Potts — came together after a night of playing Nintendo 64 and drinking milkshakes in Long Beach, California. About the song the Tony says, “We were all at this party and I was having a bad night. So we all left to go hang out at our studio and play some N64. We ended up jamming and that’s when we wrote the hook over an old cowbell loop. We wanted all of the synth tones to sound like Street Fighter II style arcade sounds to commemorate the night. The whole thing came together really quickly, and it does a good job of representing our EP.” The release of Dead Inside follows up the EP’s first single Sly which you can check out at SoundCloud or Spotify.
Old video games run in this group’s DNA, and that is reflected in their sonics. The songs have a sonic pallete that wouldn’t sound out of place on soundtracks from vintage games like Golden Eye and Street Fighter II. The group’s debut EP utilizes these sounds to draw on themes of nostalgia, anxiety, and young adulthood.
Recorded between several “spare-bedroom” studios, the EP aims to create an intimate setting to reflect its lyrical themes. Songs like Dead Inside and Fire strut with a traditional indie swagger while others like Sly and Oxygen lean towards lo-fi pop.
