The duo of Lindsay Pitts and Clifford John Usher, GEMS craft songs that play out like a series of confessions. ‘Kill the One You Love’ indulges in GEMS evocative shadow pop, balancing gauzy atmospherics with an emotional heft that explores existential longing and raw human truths. The title, a reference to Chuck Palahniuks Fight Club, shrouds the project in a funerary cloud, alluding to the death of a relationship, the death of love, the loss of self. GEMS try to capture the intangible and they arrive closest with ‘Kill the One You Love,’ an album of hurt, longing, and the beauty found in the space between. Clifford says, music is a never-ending process of learning and growing and reaching. Of stepping outside of what is familiar and moving into a place where there arent answers. ‘Kill the One You Love’ arrives October 30th via Carpark Records, with pre-orders available via iTunes and Carpark Records.
