Jersey’s fuzz-loving alt-rockers Yawn Mower are back at it with Geothermal Springs, the latest single from their upcoming sophomore LP ‘I Just Can’t Wait To Die,’ due out August 15 via Mint 400 Records. The track arrives with a brand new video (up on YouTube now) and it’s a woozy, lovable little slice of life that finds joy in the mundane—and maybe a hot air balloon or two.

‘I Just Can’t Wait To Die’ follows their 2022 debut ‘To Each Their Own Coat’ and amps everything up: more hooks, more grit, more heart. The band calls this one their Pinkerton moment, going DIY top-to-bottom—from engineering and mixing to mastering the whole thing themselves (save for drums, tracked with Evan Bernard, known for his work with Mannequin Pussy and Soul Glo).

Geothermal Springs isn’t some abstract metaphor—well, maybe just a little. “Biff’s girlfriend went to Iceland a few years back,” says vocalist/guitarist Mike Chick. “We were chatting and I came up with the line, ‘Wish that I was with you for the foss.’ Foss means waterfall in Icelandic. It felt like a postcard sentiment, and the rest of the lyrics sort of just… happened. Ordering Chinese food, mall hangs with my little sister, gardening, not riding hot air balloons.” Real-life stuff with a surreal glow.

This new single follows the previously released Rascal, which Stereogum dubbed “grandly poppy alt-rock” packed with “Weezer-ish guitars, fancy orchestration, and vocal hooks for days.” Big energy, big sound—but still rooted in the band’s salt-of-the-earth storytelling.

Yawn Mower started in Asbury Park back in 2015 and have spent the last decade building a scene around themselves. They’ve shared stages with Mannequin Pussy, Oso Oso, The Good Life, Hot Snakes, and plenty more—always bringing an off-kilter mix of joy and grit to the table.

The new record is a collaborative milestone too. Unlike earlier releases driven by Chick and drummer Biff Swenson, ‘I Just Can’t Wait To Die’ sees full-band songwriting from start to finish. Bassist Dana Yurcisin, guitarist Rudy Meier, and violinist Nicole Scorsone all bring their personalities to the forefront—creating an album that’s loud, heartfelt, and strangely comforting.

Catch Yawn Mower live as they roll through the East Coast this summer and fall, including a big hometown release show at Wonder Bar in Asbury Park on August 30. Dates below!
