Detroit synth-punk lifers ADULT. are back in full scorched-earth mode. The duo share their ferocious new single R U 4 $ALE, a snarling preview of their upcoming album ‘Kissing Luck Goodbye,’ out March 27 via Dais Records—and yeah, it hits exactly as hard as you want it to.
A quarter-century deep into their collaborative project, ADULT. sound more volatile, focused, and furious than ever. ‘Kissing Luck Goodbye’ is loud but razor-clear, built with upgraded gear and an expanded sonic arsenal that puts texture, tension, and impact front and center. Nicola Kuperus’ vocals take on a commanding new presence—part chant, part taunt, part possessed laughter—cutting through the mix with biting clarity. That laughter, threaded throughout the album, becomes a dark leitmotif for the absurd menace of modern life.
On R U 4 $ALE, Kuperus spits the line “THE CHAOS IS WHAT THEY WANT,” a mission statement disguised as a hook. The song confronts greed, despair, and disorder head-on, choosing defiance over detachment. As Adam Lee Millerputs it: “You have two choices in this hellscape—fight or be depressed. Either one is okay. But our choice to fight back was simple.”
If history suggests anything, it’s that ADULT. have never been interested in getting comfortable. For more than 25 years, the duo have embodied unease and resistance, and if anything, the times have only sharpened their instincts. Recent live shows—where they revisited bass-heavy cuts from the early 2000s—rekindled a raw, physical energy. “We were in Paris and kids were stage diving,” Kuperus recalls. “I was like, this is rad. This is the energy I want again.”
That spark arrived alongside real hardship: Kuperus dealing with chronic vertigo, the devastating loss of close friend and collaborator Douglas McCarthy of Nitzer Ebb (to whom the album is dedicated), and a general sense of burnout and dread that stalled progress for a while. Studios overheated, car batteries died, gear broke—everything felt cursed. But instead of collapsing, ADULT. doubled down.
They rebuilt their process from the ground up: their first new microphones in 20 years, obsessive sound-design sessions, and a massive sample library sourced from thrift-store records, field recordings, and even shop vacs run through pedals. Pause the album at any moment and there’s chaos everywhere—dissonant, dizzying, and somehow locked together. A chance encounter with producer Nolan Gray (who happened to be hosting the rental where they were staying) helped push the project into its final, fully realized form. Against all odds, luck showed up—just in time to be kissed goodbye.
To celebrate the release, ADULT. will take their notoriously high-stakes live show across the U.S. this spring, hitting both coasts, the Midwest, and plenty of sweaty rooms in between. Expect catharsis, volume, and zero nostalgia padding—this is ADULT. in fight mode.
‘Kissing Luck Goodbye’ arrives March 27.
