Thirteen years behind the kit will teach you a thing or two about a song. But Keith Carne — drummer and backing vocalist for NYC indie-pop darlings We Are Scientists — isn’t content sitting in the back anymore. And honestly? Thank the cosmos he isn’t.
His debut solo single Look For The Moon is out now, and it’s a stunner. Shimmering synths, a pulse that’s got one foot firmly planted in the ’90s Madchester scene, and an emotional core so tender it practically aches — this is the kind of song that sneaks up on you somewhere over the Atlantic at 37,000 feet and just wrecks you in the best possible way.
Written for his wife, artist Hayley Youngs, the track is a love letter born of airport runways and time zones and the particular loneliness of being the one who’s always leaving. Carne puts it perfectly: “Hayley and I always talk about our moon-connection when I’m gone — about how we can connect with one another simply by looking at the moon when we’re apart. Just the act of looking for it brings me great comfort because it brings her to mind.”
There’s also a shoutout to Delta airline wine in there, which — relatable, Keith. Deeply relatable.
Look For The Moon is the emotional anchor of his debut album, ’Magenta Light,’ dropping independently on April 20, 2026 — and the backstory behind that title is as wild and wonderful as the music itself. The name came from a psychedelic vision his wife had, in which she saw sparkling magenta light pouring from his face. Carne went into the studio the very next morning with that image burning in his brain. He recorded the entire album in his Midtown Manhattan studio, lit by an actual magenta LED lamp Hayley gifted him after her vision. How’s that for full-circle?
Across eight tracks, ’Magenta Light’ draws inspiration from the explosive spiritual jazz of Pharoah Sanders and the infectious dance energy of Fred Again — a pairing that shouldn’t work and absolutely does. Carne wrote, produced, and played virtually every instrument himself, which is less surprising once you hear his logic: “Drumming in a band is like conducting an orchestra from the back of the bandstand.” The man has been listening harder than anyone in the room this whole time.

The tracklist alone reads like a mood board for an existential road trip:
1. Totally Liminal
2. Keep Away
3. 36 & Counting
4. 37 Hours
5. Contortionist Jazz Exotica
6. Look For The Moon
7. Mist Trail
8. The Falls
From the groove-driven drift of Totally Liminal to the nature-struck wonder of Mist Trail and The Falls, the album moves through connection and dislocation, the spiritual and the deeply personal — all anchored by an indie-pop backbone that keeps things gloriously grounded.
‘Magenta Light’ was mixed by Brian Bond (Gem County), mastered by Zeno Pittarelli, with cover artwork by Hayley Youngs herself and design by Benedict Kupstas (Field Guides). A true family affair.
Look For The Moon is streaming everywhere now. ‘Magenta Light’ lands April 20, 2026.
