Copenhagen’s finest are back, and they sound absolutely electric. Iceage have announced their sixth studio album, ‘For Love of Grace & the Hereafter,’ due May 29th via Mexican Summer — and to formally kick the door open, they’ve shared a new single, Ember.
If the previously released Star was the glittering come-on — a love-drunk dance punk strut that had Pitchfork calling it “magnetically cool” — then Ember is the full plunge. The album opener starts deceptively loose: a sliding chord run, a glockenspiel threading through the murk. Then it explodes. It’s a breathless sprint through city streets, fueled by infatuation and adrenaline, with vocalist Elias Rønnenfelt delivering the kind of line only Iceage could make feel completely natural: “I love you in an ominous way.” The video was co-directed by the band and Ira Rønnenfelt.
The album was recorded at Silence Studio, a modest house in rural Sweden near the Norwegian border — the same spot where they cut ‘Plowing Into the Field of Love’ back in 2014. That’s not a random call. Rønnenfelt has been clear about the intent: “The songs needed to be immediate, urgent, raw, and fast. We wanted to try to shed any unnecessary weight.”
Produced and mixed by the band alongside Nis Bysted, ‘For Love of Grace & the Hereafter’ is being described as Iceage’s tightest record yet — lean setups, live decisions, minimal overdubs, and lyrics written just weeks before they hit the studio to keep everything feeling on the edge. Wordless howls, detuned riffs, handclaps, breakdowns, and a chaotic pennywhistle choral break apparently make appearances. Classic.
The full lineup — Rønnenfelt, guitarists Johan Suurballe Wieth and Casper Morilla Fernandez, drummer Dan Kjær Nielsen, and bassist Jakob Tvilling Pless — has been playing together since their teenage years, and it shows. This record sounds like a band who’ve earned every second of the chaos they’re inviting you into.
