New album ‘Come Back Down’ out September 19 via Julia’s War Recordings
Nashville’s shape-shifting experimental-pop duo Total Wife — aka Luna Kupper and Ash Richter — are back with make it last, the dreamy, swirling latest taste of their upcoming record ‘Come Back Down’. Built on layers of reprocessed guitars, hazy vocal textures, and lyrics soaked in fleeting euphoria, the track finds the sweet spot between shoegaze shimmer and road-trip rush.
“‘make it last’ started as kind of a horny song,” Richter laughs. “I wanted to write something a little cheeky, but it evolved into a love song to the road — an ode to time passing, veiled by the excitement of living. When overwhelming euphoria just pulls you out of your surroundings.”
The single follows last month’s second spring and continues Total Wife’s run of rich, unpredictable releases. Over the past decade, they’ve cemented themselves as East Coast DIY fixtures, carving out an art-forward, genre-fluid sound that’s hard to pin down — but easy to get lost in.
Their new album, ‘Come Back Down,’ was born in the liminal space between dream and waking. With all her synths sold to make rent, Kupper turned to reimagining sounds from the band’s own catalog, reshaping guitars into synth tones and lifting vocal snippets from an unreleased Elliott Smith cover to weave throughout the record. The result? An intricate, self-referential sonic universe that’s experimental yet precise.
Lyrically, Richter is as direct as she’s ever been — reflecting on connection, isolation, and the push-pull between joy and paranoia. Nature, childhood memories, and magical realism run through the songs, grounding their heady soundscapes in vivid, emotional storytelling.
Total Wife will hit the road soon, including a show at New York’s Night Club 101 on August 30 and a Nashville hometown date supporting LA dream-pop outfit Dummy this October.
