Brooklyn’s own smush—the dynamic duo of Emily Borrowman (bass/vocals) and Atley King (guitars)—have just dropped a gorgeous new video for their shoegaze-infused reimagining of Norah Jones’ classic Don’t Know Why. The track comes off their forthcoming covers EP, ‘standards’.
Premiering via FLOOD Magazine, the self-directed video was shot all over New York City and doubles as a heartfelt love letter from the married pair to each other. “We made this video in the same way we make everything else: together. Like the song it’s for, it captures the longing we share for each other,” smush explains. “For the two of us, these creative moments we find ourselves in serve as love letters of special times shared. By offering a look into our world, we hope that it inspires others to find and forge deep and meaningful connections. Though the song and video carry a slightly melancholic tone, it really highlights the importance of having people in your life that you care about and keep close.”
The ‘standards’ EP is a curated mix of smush’s signature DIY indie sensibility with some unexpected sonic turns. Self-produced and mixed by Sonny Diperri (who has worked with DIIV, Julie, My Bloody Valentine, Trent Reznor, M83, and David Longstreth), it features a lineup of covers spanning Hotline TNT, Retail Drugs, Field Medic, Big Rig, and even Owl City’s iconic Fireflies. Don’t Know Why has already turned heads, earning nods from Alternative Press, Consequence, Sirius XMU, Spotify’s Shoegaze Now playlist, Earmilk, Cover Me, and more. Pre-orders for ‘standards’ are live here and on DSPs.
smush first emerged from the shoegaze underground with their 2024 debut LP, ‘if you were here i’d be home now,’ quickly earning acclaim for their lush, textured sound that feels simultaneously familiar and new. The Canadian duo originally met in Vancouver before relocating to Brooklyn, where they’ve become fixtures in the local scene. Their music blends intimate indie rock with curious, textural experimentation, mixing rural reflection, urban life, and surreal fantasy worlds inhabited by fairies, vampires, and unicorns. Imperfect, dreamy, and hypnotic, smush’s recordings and live shows alike have a way of turning casual listeners into die-hard fans.
