Chicago’s synthy post-punk band Absolutely Not have announced their new album ‘Problematic’. The album will be coming out March 1st via No Trend Records (Bandcamp pre-order) and to mark the announcement, the band has shared the video for the album’s first single Bottom of the Pit. Watch the clip via YouTube below.
Directed by Dave Rentauskas and starring Maggie Kubley and Risa DeVinney, the video is about the infuriating basic Becky’s of the world who have no concept of anything going on outside their little bubble. Absolutely Not is here to help shatter their bubble and expose them for who they are… in their typical half evil/half comical fashion.
Absolutely Not’s sound and lyrics have always covered bleak political and social themes, but with a comic twist and pop sensibility. Their new record ‘Problematic’ (self-produced by frontman Donnie Moore and engineered by Brian Fox) is no different, though it’s a bit darker and has a heavier sci-fi horror vibe to it. Lyrically, the album’s themes tackle issues of racism, homophobia, crime, a divided America, and how bleak it feels just trying to live in modern society. Recorded and mixed over the span of a year, this album shows a new side of Absolutely Not. Donnie and his sister Madison (AbNot’s keyboardist/vocalist) also run Glitter Creeps, the long-running, inclusive LGBTQ monthly event at Chicago’s famed venue, Empty Bottle. Since the band contains members of both the LGBTQ and POC communities, Glitter Creeps and the entire band’s aim, existence and motivation is to shred ignorance and ignite change.
