Brooklyn experimental art-popsters Voice Coils have unveiled their debut ‘Heaven’s Sense’ EP courtesy of Consequence Of Sound, which came out on June 30 via Shatter Your Leaves. Take a listen to Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair from the EP via Soundcloud below.
The EP picks up where the band’s debut 7″ left off, further advancing their musical trajectory, a genre defying sound that strains against its earthly confines for some distant celestial object. Both intricate and melodic, the music on ‘Heaven’s Sense’ is once again buoyed by the angelic vocals of Mitski, whose debut album ‘Bury Me At Makeout Creek’ helped turn her into a critical darling in late 2014. The band’s rendition of the traditional song Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair was also recently picked up by both Pitchfork and Brooklyn Vegan who said that it sounds “equally rooted in traditional British folk as it does in droning experimental music”, further showcasing the band’s desire to operate outside genre boundaries.

Voice Coils have forged a vivid and complex musical language founded in the traditions of contemporary classical and experimental music, and idioms of folk, art-pop, and various types of rock. As expressive melodic and harmonic threads are seamlessly woven into an ornate rhythmic and structural patterning, their music inspires an overwhelming sense of awe, while affirming Voice Coils as a unique and visionary ensemble. Voice Coils creates music of architectural beauty; one where ornate and unadorned elements realize a space of luminous and resonant presence.
