Belgium’s beloved noise-makers, SONS, are back—and they’ve got something shiny and loud to share. The four-piece have dropped a brand-new single called Hello, and it’s the second taste of their upcoming album ‘Hallo,’ set to land September 26 via [PIAS] Recordings.
If you’ve caught SONS live—or had your eardrums joyfully pummeled by their earlier releases—you know they don’t hold back. From sharing stages with Jack White, Wolfmother, and Royal Blood to smashing sets at Rock Werchter, Pukkelpop, Pinkpop, and more, they’ve built a solid rep for high-voltage, full-throttle garage-rock goodness.
But ‘Hallo’ is a different beast. Yes, the amps are still cranked, and the drums still hit like a freight train, but this time there’s a sparkle in the chaos. There’s a new kind of energy here—call it joy, or maybe just evolution. According to the band, this album is all about tapping into deeper emotions and finding new ways to say what needs to be said. Less fists-on-the-table, more eyes-meeting-across-the-room.
A big part of this shift? Producer David McCracken. If the name rings a bell, it should—he’s worked with everyone from Beyoncé and A$AP Rocky to Ian Brown and Depeche Mode. He also helped shape dEUS’s sultry banger The Architect, so he knows a thing or two about groove and grit. When McCracken heard SONS’ demos, he was all in, even hopping across the Channel to Belgium to help hone the sound before bringing the band to London to record.
The result? A record that still punches hard but knows how to dance—and think. First single Do My Thing proves it, racking up radio plays and love across Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Eastern Europe. It’s got swagger, bounce, and bite.
And when it comes to lyrics, ‘Hallo’ takes a big step forward. Frontman Robin Borghgraef shares that McCracken challenged them to start with meaning, not just riffs: “He constantly asked, ‘What do you want to say?’ That made us write from a more honest place.” The result is a set of songs with real depth—without losing the fun.
Title track Hello dives into our always-online, can’t-log-off lives and that weird dance we do with social media. It’s fast, furious, and it sets the tone for the whole record. As Robin puts it: “Here we say ‘Hello’ to everyone who knows us—or doesn’t. Welcome to our latest record.”
