You didn’t think you were leaving the Void, did you?
Total Fucking Darkness — the delightfully off-kilter triumvirate of Torquil Campbell (Stars), Stephen Ramsay (Young Galaxy), and producer Tom McFall (U2, REM, Bloc Party) — have returned with their new single Beaten To Write, and honestly? It sounds exactly like the world right now feels.
That’s not a bad thing. That’s kind of the whole point.
Equal parts world-weary anthem and irresistible earworm, Beaten To Write calls to mind the playful electronic experimentations of early New Order at their most gloriously infectious. Built around a relentless, pulsing bassline and Campbell’s signature vocal hooks, this thing will burrow into your brain on a Monday morning commute and have you doing a little seat dance before you even realize what’s happening.
The narrative framing the single? Oh, it’s painfully, universally perfect. You dragged yourself to the gym. You earned the ice cream. You splurged the eleven dollars on pralines and cream because something’s got to give eventually, right? And then — SPLAT — a low-balance notification catches your jacket pocket, your phone clips the cone, and two glorious scoops hit the pavement.
Beaten to write.
It’s that specific flavour of cosmic injustice that TFD have always done so well — finding the absurd, aching humor in the everyday disasters that pile up until they somehow become… danceable. That’s the magic trick here. The song shouldn’t make you move. And yet.
Beaten To Write is out now. Welcome back to the Void.
