Bronx-born, New Jersey-based composer Michael Keane — better known under his alias Textbook Maneuver — has released a stunning new single, Nocturnal Musings, via his Life Science Records imprint. It’s a glitched-out dreamscape: restless beats weave beneath jagged synth stabs, blinking beeps, and spectral textures, pulling listeners into a half-lit world where reality blurs and time slips sideways.
The track comes on the heels of his acclaimed debut album, ‘Adrenaline Slip’ (2025), which has already racked up nearly 130,000 streams and earned features in Magnetic Magazine, Illustrate Magazine, WWAM, Music For All (Brazil), and Good Music Radar.
Keane’s background shapes his sound as much as his influences do. A classically trained pianist with a punk DIY heart, he blends cinematic storytelling with experimental sound design, drawing inspiration from an eclectic spectrum: Genesis (Duke era), Rush, Gary Numan, The Postal Service, U.N.K.L.E., and Phantogram, while channeling echoes of Jon Hopkins, Boards of Canada, and Nils Frahm.
Speaking about the origins of Nocturnal Musings, Keane shared: “I spent much of my time composing for the ‘Strike Joy’ EP on a screened porch at night, during the height of cricket and frog activity, focusing on loops and sound design. Elements of the rhythms and tones from nature helped inspire the track.”
With each release, Textbook Maneuver is carving out a space where IDM meets cinematic ambience — soundscapes built to both challenge and soothe.
