It’s been a year since we heard from total tommy, and the Australia-based artist makes her return count. Pretty Little Mouth — out now via Play It Again Sam — is a deadpan, sharp-eyed take on love bombing, falling fast, and getting spat right back out. Welcome back, indeed.
The track was co-produced by total tommy and Tom Stafford (whose credits include Joy Crooks, Orla Gartland, and Jelani Blackman) out of Stafford’s London studio, and it sounds like the start of something new. total tommy describes it best herself:
“Pretty Little Mouth is a play on the saying ‘butter wouldn’t melt’. I wrote the line ‘smoke wouldn’t leak from her pretty little mouth’ in reference to a love-bomber. It’s about falling easily but ultimately getting hurt just as quickly when you get spat back out. This happened to a friend of mine recently, and this song is my dead-pan, not so serious take on it all.“
There’s a cool, almost wry detachment to the whole thing — the kind of song that knows exactly what it’s doing. If you’ve ever gotten swept up in someone who turned out to be all flash and no follow-through, this one’s going to hit close to home.
total tommy has already earned nods from NME, i-D, The Times, Clash, DIY, Dork, Notion, and The Line Of Best Fit — and if Pretty Little Mouth is any indication of where this new chapter is heading, that list is only going to grow.
More from total tommy is on the way. Stay tuned.
