knitting (ex-Lonely Parade) share new single ‘throwaway year’

Montreal’s knitting have been bubbling under in their city’s scene since it awoke from the pandemic. Led by Mischa Dempsey, who cut their teeth in the beloved Peterborough, ON teenage post-punk band Lonely Parade, the band (which also features guitarist Sarah Harris, bassist Piper Curtis, and drummer Andy Mulcair) have been appearing on bills with people like Julie Doiron, Nap Eyes and Gulfer and began attracting wider attention with a self-titled cassette they self-released last year, which led to appearances at POP Montreal and Sled Island. In 2023, the band are going to be venturing outside of Canada for the first time, appearing at festivals like SXSW, Treefort and New Colossus, and now they have shared a new single in advance of those dates entitled throwaway year. “I wrote ‘throwaway year’ about the year when I was 18,” Dempsey explains. “It was a really rough one, I moved out of home for the first time and lost a lot of friendships and ended the year feeling it was irredeemable, and just needed to be thrown out. Fast forward to this year, I found myself thinking about this song again, in relation the pandemic and feeling like so much of my year had already been wasted, or thrown away. This song is significant because it’s the first song we’ve arranged and recorded together as a full band – I think this brings a feeling of relief to the song, like the worst of the isolation is hopefully over, and we have each other and a sense of community again.”
