London quartet Lull has premiered a video for the title-track of their sophomore EP, Nouvelle. Watch it via YouTube below. About the video, guitarist/vocalist Jon Billinge had to say, “We worked with director Tom Palliser on the ‘Nouvelle’ shoot. A lot of our songs carry motifs of the sea, but we knew that we didn’t want anything too fussy or choreographed. There’s always some sort of ebb and flow to our tracks, from these quiet rushes into these big waves, so it felt right to have the placid sea contrasting against Tom’s kinetic camerawork. It’s like the woozy reel of the lure before it gets cast off again, which is true to the song’s heart.”
‘Nouvelle’ was released last month via PaperCup Music. Recorded at Bear Bites Horse Studio and The Premises in London by Wayne Adams and Neil Tollitt, the five-song release is both nouvelle by name and by nature, seeing the band taking a heavier approach to their sound that blurs the lines between shoegaze, rock and chamber pop. Restrained passages evoke the stalking dread of early Cocteau Twins records, while more nuanced vocal lines call to mind the haunting falsetto of Billy Corgan and Jeff Buckley.
‘Nouvelle’ is the follow-up to last June’s self-titled, debut EP, which garnered kind words from outlets such as the Stereogum who stated, Lull create, “deep pools of brilliant noise,” the NME who said Lull are “equal parts My Bloody Valentine and Smashing Pumpkins,” and DIY who called their sound, “a heartbreaking explosion, like the demolition of a skyline-stealing skyscraper that was stinking out the city.”
