Oakland post-punk powerhouse Street Eaters are charging back with a brand new studio album, ‘Opaque,’ set to land September 5 via Dirt Cult Records. It’s their first full-length since 2017’s ‘The Envoy,’ and they’re not easing back in—they’re barrelling through with seven tracks that hit hard with raw emotion, political bite, and that signature buzzed-out energy we’ve come to expect.
Kicking off the album cycle is Tempers, a fierce and jagged track that captures the chaotic isolation of uncertain times. The single arrives with a fittingly cathartic video directed by Krista Wright and Theo Garvey, where Street Eaters wreak havoc on a hospital waiting room that, metaphorically and literally, leaves everyone hanging. It’s as furious as it is therapeutic.
Frontwoman Megan March digs deep on ‘Opaque,’ exploring trauma, healing, and transformation—both personal and societal. Since the band’s last release, she’s become a mother, an experience she calls “an incredible joy and opportunity to rewire emotional pathways and deep wounds.” But her journey wasn’t without struggle. Her childbirth experience, marred by medical neglect, cracked open new truths about misogyny in the healthcare system. That pain and clarity course through the bones of ‘Opaque’.
“This is an album about transition,” says March. “It’s about realizing you’re living life on your own terms, but still dragging those emotional and societal weights with you. Healing doesn’t come easy.”
Co-founder John No echoes that complexity. “We’re trying to suture up wounds at this point. It’s about building something honest, something healthy, from everything we’ve carried.”
Joining March and No since 2019 is guitarist Joan Toledo, a Florida-born punk who fled both familial and state transphobia. A former editor of Maximum Rocknroll and a union organizer at San Francisco’s City Lights Books, Toledo brings a sharpened political edge and sonic depth to the band’s already-ferocious sound.
With ‘Opaque,’ Street Eaters are peeling back the layers—ripping open pain, reclaiming joy, and finding community through the noise. It’s messy. It’s fierce. And it’s alive.
