Sea Fever unveil ‘Explanation’ – A haunting final collab with the late Denise Johnson

Sea Fever have just dropped a powerful new track called Explanation, a long-awaited release that features the unmistakable voice of the late, great Denise Johnson—best known for her iconic work with Primal Scream, A Certain Ratio, and New Order. Originally tucked away as a vinyl-exclusive bonus on the band’s recent album ‘Surface Sound,’ the song now finally sees a full digital release via Cosmic Glue.

And it’s not just any track—it’s one of the last known recordings Denise completed before her untimely passing in 2020. Left unfinished at the time, Explanation is now brought to life through a moving vocal pairing with Sea Fever’s Beth Cassidy (of Factory Records legends Section 25), who channels Denise’s raw energy in a fierce, feminist back-and-forth that feels both urgent and timeless.

This isn’t just a release,” says Sea Fever’s Tom Chapman (also of New Order), “it’s a farewell, a thank you, and a reminder of how lucky we were to hear that voice in our lifetime.

Chapman originally began working on Explanation with Denise in 2019, before COVID shut down the world—and the sessions. Revisiting the track meant returning to the moment he lost a close friend and collaborator. With time, and the help of Cassidy and the full Sea Fever crew, the song was finally completed.

Every time I returned to Denise’s vocal, it was like she was still in the room,” Chapman reflects. “Her presence was so strong. It took time to be ready.

Beth Cassidy stepped in to help bring the track home, adding her own voice to a project that now serves as both tribute and creative torch-passing.

Denise had this commanding energy,” Cassidy says. “I didn’t know her lyrics’ intentions, but I tried to match her vibe. Some words became sounds, almost like emotions themselves. It was a lively one! I dialled up the ‘woman power’.”

Musically, Explanation is a bold, beat-driven track with a sense of defiance baked right into its rhythm. It’s a statement. A protest. A celebration. A song that lives in the space between genres and generations, bridging the gap between legends and the now.

Sea Fever—rounded out by Iwan Gronow (also Johnny Marr’s bassist), Phil Cunningham (New Order), and Elliot Barlow (Brix & The Extricated)—released their sophomore album ‘Surface Sound’ this spring. Self-produced and recorded across Greater Manchester and Cheshire, it picks up where their 2021 debut ‘Folding Lines’ left off, with shimmering post-punk textures and widescreen synth-rock ambition.

With Explanation, they’ve not just released a song—they’ve released a piece of history. A goodbye and a battle cry, wrapped in one unforgettable moment.
