Montreal’s wild-eyed Japanese psych-rock force TEKE::TEKE are back with a twisted new treat — Onaji Heya (Holy Fuck Remix) — a snarling, hypnotic reimagining of a track from their 2023 album ‘Hagata’. The remix is part of ‘Hagata Delux,’ a souped-up version of the record landing September 19 on Kill Rock Stars.
This time around, Holy Fuck’s Brian Borcherdt and Graham Walsh dive headfirst into the TEKE::TEKE sound vortex, stitching together loops of jagged guitar, feverish beats, and sudden swells of flute that feel equal parts dangerous and euphoric. It’s a ride that pulls you in with a steady pulse, slips into a breathy, psychedelic break, then hits the accelerator straight through to the end.
The track comes with a visualizer crafted by TEKE::TEKE vocalist Maya Kuroki — a shifting, trippy dreamscape that mirrors the remix’s bending, mutating energy. “It was fun, chaotic, and kind of nuts,” says Borcherdt. “Graham had his own thing going on with some of the beats; so our parts converged nicely into one cohesive creature.”
If you’ve never seen TEKE::TEKE live, you’ll get your chance soon: they headline Pop Montreal on September 26 at Théâtre Rialto with Holy Fuck in support, before heading to Europe later this fall.
Hagata Delux isn’t just remixes. It’s a treasure chest of reinterpretations, rarities, and deep cuts, including work from SUUNS, Sei Nakauchi Pelletier’s own remix of Gotoku Lemon, a new track called Meimu, and covers ranging from The Clash to Unwound. The limited-edition eco-mixed vinyl even dips into the band’s earlier era, making these Hagata-era gems available on wax for the first time.
TEKE::TEKE’s genre-warping fusion of Japanese balladry, surf rock, and fuzzed-out psychedelia has been praised everywhere from The New Yorker to Iggy Pop himself — and with Hagata Delux, they’re about to bend your brain all over again.
