Canada’s Evil Beach Boys are back — and Kyle better learn to surf

If you haven’t met Motherhood yet, let us do the honours. The Fredericton, New Brunswick-born art-surf-punk outfit have been described as “Canada’s Evil Beach Boys” — and honestly? That tells you everything and nothing at the same time, which is exactly the vibe they’re going for.

The band just dropped a gnarly new single called Kyle Hangs Ten, and it rips. Think Misirlou-adjacent guitar melody, a swaggering drum groove, and the kind of organized chaos that makes you feel like you’re simultaneously wiping out on a wave and moshing in a basement. In other words: perfect.

Here’s the fun backstory. Kyle Hangs Ten is actually a sped-up alternate version of Kyle Hangs at Noon — a track that made it onto their last LP ‘Thunder Perfect Mind’. When they were recording the album, the band couldn’t agree on the right tempo. Co-producer Kyle Cunjak had a genius (chaotic) solution: do both — one slow, one fast. The slow, spaghetti-western version made the cut. The fast one got shelved… until now.

As Motherhood put it: “We were trying to write the most surfy song we could without over-complicating a genre that, at its core, is just swaggy country music.” Swaggy country music. We’re using that forever.

Oh, and the stakes are delightfully unhinged: Kyle Cunjak was apparently promised he’d learn to actually hang ten by the time the song dropped. If not? He hangs at noon. Respect the deadline, Kyle.

Stream it. Play it loud.
