Carla J. Easton — the Scottish songwriter you might know from TeenCanteen, Poster Paints, or her time in The Vaselines’ live lineup — is back with a new single and a big announcement. Really, Really, Really, Really Sad is out now, and it’s the latest taste of her upcoming album ‘I Think That I Might Love You’, due May 8 on Ernest Jenning Record Co.
The song debuted over at Rock and Roll Globe alongside an exclusive interview with Carla — worth a read if you want to go deeper. In the meantime, stream Really, Really, Really, Really Sad on all platforms and check out the previously released single Oh Yeah while you’re at it.
A Guitar Record, a Documentary, and a Red Thread
‘I Think That I Might Love You’ marks a real shift for Easton. It’s a pop record at its heart — but her first built primarily around the guitar. The pivot grew out of her work on Since Yesterday: The Untold Story of Scotland’s Girl Bands, a documentary in which women repeatedly shared stories of picking up an instrument, learning a few chords, and diving headfirst into making music. After spending her career centered around keys, Easton felt the pull to do the same.
The album was produced by Howard Bilerman (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Wolf Parade, Leonard Cohen, The Weather Station) and recorded live off the floor at Glasgow’s legendary Chem 19 studio — with just a single day of rehearsal. That setup was intentional. The album favors feel and connection over polish, and it shows in the best way.
Co-writes across the record’s eleven tracks include collaborations with Simon Liddell (Frightened Rabbit, Poster Paints), MALKA of Scottish songwriting collective Hen Hoose, Glasgow’s Man of the Minch, Canadian singer-songwriter Brett Nelson, and cult hero Darren Hayman of Hefner. It’s a proper community effort — and the communal energy comes through.
At its emotional core, ‘I Think That I Might Love You’ is about friendship: finding it, cherishing it, and learning to live with its loss. The seed was planted at Third Man Records in Nashville, where Easton and Brett Nelson began writing around the concept of the red thread.
“We started writing about the idea of the red thread — the idea that you have more than one soulmate, platonic as well as romantic, and that if you find any kind of thread connecting you to someone, it’s something worth following.” — Carla J. Easton
Buoyant yet reflective, immediate yet deeply felt — ‘I Think That I Might Love You’ is shaping up to be one of the year’s most warmly human pop records. Pre-order it here.
