Bristol progressive art-rock quartet SANS FROID have announced they will release their debut album ‘Hello, Boil Brain’ this autumn 2024, with further details to be revealed over the coming months.

In the meantime, the band have shared the official video for their new single The Still, which is out now on all good digital service providers. Watch The Still via YouTube below or stream it here.

Filmed at Rough Trade Bristol by Joe Singh, it’s a thrilling look at the band’s already-renowned live show, which will also be showcased at select live dates, including a support slot with fellow experimental prog act Poly-Math, alongside a coveted slot at this year’s ArcTanGent Festival, with further UK live dates TBA in the near future.

Produced, engineered and mixed by Ben Green at Circadian Studios, Exeter and mastered by Stephen Kerrison at Weird Jungle, the track is an enthralling first glimpse of the band’s forthcoming new record—a stark and disconcerting offering that lurches between piano stabs and off kilter rhythms before collapsing into an expansive, sludgy chorus skittering with insectoid electronics, all propelled along by the mighty vocal of frontwoman Aisling Rhiannon.

Commenting on the track, vocalist Ais says: ‘The Still’ mirrors the narrative of our debut album Hello, Boil Brain, delving into the profound anxiety stemming from emerging out of a world-altering pandemic and the daunting prospect of reintegrating into a frenetic ‘normal’ society. It reflects the realisation that social interaction, once second nature to many, now feels overwhelming, and the rapid pace of life no longer aligns comfortably. The yearning to linger in a state of slow existence amidst the chaos.”

Prior to their current incarnation cemented in 2024, Aisling Rhiannon (vocals/keys) and Toby Green (drums/vocals) from the band were previously based in Leeds and performed as a duo known as Pave, before expanding the line up with Freddie (Bass) and Charlie Barnes (Guitar) added to the family under Sang Froid, before Freddie was eventually replaced by current bassist Ben Harris.

Recorded at HOHM studios in Bradford with Tom Goodall (Cattle), their ‘Worms’ EP and standalone single ‘Roadworks’ were released in 2020, before the band settled on the minor alteration Sans Froid to avoid clashes with a French goth rock band of the same name.

Already catching comparisons to exciting contemporaries in fellow progressive heavy music boundary-pushers Exploring Birdsong, PEACH, Chiyoda Ku, CLT DRP, Voronoi and Sugar Horse, their innovative and chameleonic sound also sees them citing Radiohead and The Mars Volta as key influences.
