Maritime expats turned Montrealers Fireball Kid are back, and they’re mixing up the kind of indie rock that smells like summer dusk, campfire smoke, and coastal nostalgia. After making waves with their raucous, audacious party-pop debut ‘Emotional Bros Hotline’ and the synth-laden patchwork epic ‘Gas Station,’ the band’s upcoming LP ‘Deer Path Turn To A Shortcut’ takes a turn: swapping neon-lit energy for textured, acoustic vibes that feel like wandering through haunted port city hillsides with a lantern in one hand and a tall cold one in the other.
Their music dives deep into the joy and heartbreak of partying, old family legends, and the ghost stories that stick with you long after the bonfire dies down. It’s wistful, it’s raw, and it’s beautifully human.
“This record was a long time coming for me. I’ve been writing about partying hard for almost as long and hard as I’ve been partying. There’s a way the hangovers and hangups of your predecessors echo into your own life, and I think there’s a lot of sad, ghostly magic there… Everybody is just kind of soldering on with a few memories of dead friends flickering into their mind while you share a smoke with them. It’s hard and it’s beautiful. We’re all following roughly defined desire lines through the woods!”
On “Guilt Drive”
The new single digs into a familiar, quietly powerful force: guilt.
“I thought I’d somehow escaped the magic hereditary Irish or Scottish Catholic guilt gene, only to realize I’m completely driven by it. She runs in the family, after all! Ultimately, we’re letting our own drifting, accumulative guilt, secrets, and stories drive us off a cliff—but that doesn’t mean it has to be lonely. We can still wreck the truck in good company.”
