Taking inspiration from mystical traditions, surrealist films, and the dramatic and mundane landscapes of the band’s hometown Saskatoon, director Craig Range presents a truly bizarre take on life, death, reincarnation and the recreational use of power tools. The band is draped in weirdness throughout the video, which features a funeral at an industrial site, a hallucinatory game of musical chairs and a very hairy altar boy.

“I honestly had no idea what was going on most of time,” singer and guitarist Tyson McShane says. “I wasn’t sure if Craig had a plan or if he was just making things up as we went along, using the opportunity to make us do ridiculous things on video.”

‘Burnt Black Cars’ was inspired by a series of photographs McShane’s father took while living in Paris in May 1968 during the city’s infamous period of civil unrest and protests. The elder McShane’s time in the Latin Quarter came with a front-row seat to a seminal moment in history. He woke up every day and stepped out his front door to see artists, philosophers and students clashing with the police, cars being set on fire and tear gas flying through the air.

“The songs on ‘Burnt Black Cars’ take inspiration from the events of May ‘68, and from my dad’s stories about it,” McShane says, “but they’re more about the way conflict and societal struggle are an omnipresent backdrop to modern life, and about the normal, human moments that still manage to shine through.”
