San Diego’s moondaddy is back with a glimmering new track, and it’s everything we want from our summer soundtracks — woozy, romantic, a little haunted, and totally transportive. Their latest single Bystander is out now, paired with a hazy visual that feels like flipping through dream fragments you’re not quite sure are yours. The video gives fans a first glimpse into the band’s next chapter.
moondaddy is the analog-leaning dream pop project fronted by Cara Poticker — a multi-talented singer, songwriter, producer, and sonic explorer who’s making magic in the margins. The band’s upcoming full-length ‘Dove Tapes’ leans into everything we love about their ethereal, lo-fi leanings: glistening guitars, gauzy synths, poetic lyricism, and vocals that feel like a whisper through thick velvet curtains.
Bystander floats in that gorgeous liminal space where longing and beauty blur together. Think Lush or Slowdive, but with a sun-drenched, West Coast shimmer. The track was recorded live to tape at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, TX with producer Manuel Calderon (Beach House, Animal Collective), then mastered directly to lacquer by Paul Gold (Grizzly Bear, Songs: Ohia). It’s a labor of love, carefully layered yet delightfully imperfect in the most analog way.
Lyrically, it hits like a soft punch to the heart. Cara sings, “Darling are you coming to me soon? / I wait like a dove on a live wire / Letting electricity form plumes that fall on the bystander.” It’s about loving from a distance, about feeling so close yet entirely removed — all the complicated static that love tends to stir up.
moondaddy first emerged from the quiet of the pandemic, spinning bedroom recordings into something rich and enveloping. Their 2023 debut ‘Poet Lies’ (via Volar Records) sold out of its vinyl variants and landed the band on bills with Beabadoobee, Peel Dream Magazine, and King Hannah. They even hit the road with DeVotchKa for a sold-out tour. Since then, they’ve built a reputation for transcendent live sets — a vibe they’ve bottled into their upcoming ‘Dove Tapes’ LP, due out later this year.
