L.A. trio Automatic are back with a new single, Lazy, giving us another taste of their upcoming album, ‘Is It Now?,’ out September 26 via Stones Throw.
The band — Izzy Glaudini (synths, vocals), Halle Saxon (bass, vocals), and Lola Dompé (drums, vocals) — continue to blur the lines between new wave, post-punk, and tripped-out electronica. On Lazy, they turn their gaze inward, unpacking the early stages of a relationship where overthinking and self-doubt spiral. The lyrics reclaim power with sharp precision: “The thing you thought you wanted / Was just the image of control.”
Working with producer Loren Humphrey (Arctic Monkeys, Nice As Fuck, Cameron Winter) for the first time, Automatic stretched their sound across both coasts, recording in New York and L.A.. Their palette draws from unexpected corners: a wink to Patrick Cowley, nods to A Certain Ratio and Air, and a fascination with that late-’70s moment when dub collided with punk.
While Lazy might masquerade as a love song — or maybe an anti-love song — it still carries Automatic’s trademark bite: political commentary smuggled inside shimmering grooves. Across ‘Is It Now?,’ the band uses minimalist hooks and bright pop sensibilities as a Trojan horse to explore automated warfare, consumerism, and oil politics without ever sounding heavy-handed.
Since releasing 2022’s ‘Excess,’ Automatic have toured alongside Tame Impala, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Marías, and IDLES. This fall, they’re hitting the road again for a co-headlining tour with Sextile.
